Melbourne cup long weekend we spent a relaxing few days away at Cape Schanck. (Close to Flinders) For my birthday Relle gave me two nights at the lighthouse at Cape Schanck. It was awesome. We stayed in the Museum cottage, just twenty meters from the Light House itself. As part of staying there we also had a tour of the light house itself. It was amazing to listen to the history and how the light house use to operate and how it operates now. Did you know that light houses in Australia still operate because insurance companies require that there is a backup system in place in case a ship can no longer use GPS for some reason. Also found out that the light continues to rotate during the day because it is basically a big magnifying glass, and if it stops the sun will fry the insides, like an ant. The light itself is insured for 5 million dollars because it is made from crystal!
While we were there we had some amazing meals. First night we went to the Flinders Hotel. While it doesn’t look like much from the outside, the hotel has been recently renovated on the inside. Its new and funky and the meals are all quite unique. I had the Double roasted pork with chicken and duck dumplings in broth with bok choy. It was fantastic! If you are ever in flinders or the vicinity I totally recommend you drop in and have a meal. The second night we had another meal to die for at Hotel Sorrento in Sorrento.. obviously. I had a eye fillet steak on… wait for it… gnocchi! I’ve had steak on mash before, but not gnocchi. I worked amazingly well.
During the days we just sat around inside, watched some tv, read books, went for some walks down along the board walk and went for a drive to the blow hole. Not that the blow hole did anything, but it was still awesome just to watch the powerful waves.
